Fragrant Cinnamon Cookie Ornaments for the Holidays
Holiday baking can be so much fun. Whether you work solo or invite friends and family to help, it’s always a pleasure. Here’s an easy way to create sweet, fragrant decorations you can display throughout your home to welcome the season.
This recipe makes 15 large cinnamon cookies. Double or even triple your batch if you want to carry this delicious scent into all your rooms. Consider making a cinnamon tree with cookies and bundles of natural cinnamon sticks tied with ribbons!
INGREDIENTS AND TOOLS
- 3/4 cup applesauce
- 2 bottles (2.37 oz. each) ground cinnamon
- Cookie cutters in various holiday shapes
- Drinking straw
- Colorful ribbon
MAKING THE COOKIE ORNAMENTS
Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix the applesauce and cinnamon in a small bowl until a smooth dough ball forms. You may need to use your hands to incorporate all the cinnamon.
Using about a quarter of the dough each time, roll dough to ¼-inch to 1/3-inch thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap.
Peel off the top sheet. Cut the dough into shapes with cookie cutters. Note: cutters that measure between 2 and 3 inches work best.
Punch a hole near the top of each ornament with a drinking straw. A skewer works fine, too – be sure the hole is big enough for the ribbon you’ve chosen.
Place ornaments on a baking sheet. Bake for 2 ½ hours. Your house will smell amazing!
Cool ornaments on a wire rack. Insert ribbon through holes and tie to hang. Add details to the finished ornaments with opaque paint pens from the craft store if desired.
NO-BAKE OPTION: Ornaments can also be dried at room temperature on a wire rack for 1 to 2 days. Turn each ornament carefully a few times while drying to ensure best results.
