Tailgating season is here. Are you ready with everything you need to host an epic celebration? Here’s how to hit the road with all the right stuff to turn your car, truck or SUV into party central.
START WITH THESE BASICS
Getting your moveable feast organized is a snap with the right tools and equipment. Even if you’ve never hosted a tailgate before, these basic items can make setup and food prep easy.
Large, rigid plastic bins. Unloading is fast when everything can be lifted out of your vehicle in one or two smooth steps. Invest in heavy-duty bins that will hold everything you need, with smaller plastic boxes inside to hold small items that go together, like condiments, cooking tools and serveware.
Wheeled cooler. Instant bar on-the-go! A standard 45-quart cooler will fit in virtually any trunk or hatch. Go bigger if you’re tailgating in a truck or van with a substantial crowd. While crushed ice is fine, large pieces of ice melt more slowly. Pro tip: fill 2-liter bottles with water and freeze to make “ice bricks.” Add a separate bag of crushed ice with scoop for drinks.
Folding chairs. A set of lightweight nylon chairs provides a place to relax. Look for ones emblazoned with your team’s logo. Extra points for extra-large cup holders! Chairs that come with their own carry bags save space in your vehicle.
Portable grill. It’s the best way to cook up mouth-watering burgers, brats and more on the spot. There are some awesome new models out there that look and feel small, but offer more than 150 square inches of cooking space. Most use charcoal. We recommend the match-light variety for ease and convenience.
ADD EXTRAS FOR COMFORT AND FUN
Pop-up tent. An easy-up canopy provides shade and protection from any passing showers. Plus, it’s easier for friends to find you in a crowd. A 10 x 10 tent offers great shelter but is lightweight and easy to transport. Look for models made with weather-resistant, UV-blocking material.
Wireless speakers. Portable Bluetooth speakers let you stream and control music from any enabled device. Keep the tunes coming with a portable charger.
Tailgate games. Cornhole, ladder ball toss and table games add a lot to your celebration. Build your own cornhole set or look for one with your team’s logo. Bring sidewalk chalk for kids, or set up pails with small balls to create a pint-sized toss game.
