For a 4,000-year-old culture, Greeks don’t get the respect they deserve – at least not when it comes to food. Perhaps it’s the ubiquitous presence of streetside gyros or wilted Greek salads that have tarnished the reputation of this bright, Mediterranean cuisine. For those looking to get reacquainted with the fare, however, there are more than a few places in Philly to get down with barrel-aged feta, freshly baked pita and a whole lot of lamb.

Chef Bobby Saritsoglou has been refining the menu at this modern Midtown Village Greek spot since his arrival over a year ago. With starters like house-cured charcuterie to cheesy peinirli (Greek strombolis) – from grilled sweetbread to chicken liver skewers – Saritsoglou is introducing us to the finer points of this ancient cuisine.

Kostas
Equal parts dive bar and casual Greek joint, this Fishtown local has a killer happy hour (think $2 beers and $3 cocktails), as well as an affordable menu of sharable appetizers and pita sandwiches. Sunday through Monday, Kostas also runs some excellent specials including a $10 sandwich and draft beer combo and $3 Greek pizzas.
